The Ministry of Civil Aviation has resumed direct, non-stop flights between Leh and Jammu from this month. Acting on a request from the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), the flights will be operated by Air India and be available on Sundays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Domestic flight operations had been suspended on this route in March due to the coronavirus. The resumption of services is expected to help students and patients who may be stranded in these regions during the extreme cold of December.

Winters are unimaginably harsh in Ladakh. Running water freezes and food supplies are restricted. The Manali-Leh and Srinagar-Leh highways—the only two roads connecting Ladakh to the rest of India—also remain shut due to snowfall and avalanche warnings. The renewal of domestic flights should thus provide a lifeline for interstate travel to locals. It also allows an entry for tourists who are brave enough to visit Ladakh at this time.
