Ever wondered what the acronym “CNF” means in a railway ticket? Well, you are not the only one thinking about this.
CNF stands for “Confirmed” in the context of Indian Railways. It implies that the passenger has a confirmed seat on the train. If you get a CNF in a train ticket, it means that you have been allocated a seat and can travel on the reserved date.

Passengers are often confused by the acronyms that are presented as a status on the update message or PNR check web page. Just as CNF full form in railways is “Confirmed”, there are many different types of PNR-related acronyms that tell you about the status of your ticket.
When a passenger books a ticket, their reservation status may show as “CNF” if their booking has been confirmed and they have been assigned a seat or berth on the train. Along with CNF status in a train, the passenger can also view their coach and seat number.
You can check the status via the IRCTC 10-digit PNR number that is visible/found on your ticket. It can be done online on ixigo. When a passenger books a ticket, they are given a PNR (Passenger Name Record) number, which is used to track the status of their booking. PNR stands for Passenger Name Record. This number stores the passenger’s information, like name, age and sex, in the IRCTC database along with their itinerary details.
When is CNF Status Allotted for a Train Ticket?
When there are only a few seats available on a train, your ticket may be given a CNF status without a seat number. The seat/berth number will be available after the chart preparation along with the coach number.
When is CNF Status with a Seat/Berth Number Allotted?
Once the chart is prepared, your CNF status on the train will change with the exact seat/berth number. This is because most tickets are cancelled at this time and IRCTC allots these berths to passengers with CNF tickets. You will receive a message on your registered mobile number once the berth/seat has been assigned. You can also check your seat number with the PNR Status feature on the ixigo trains app.
How to Check PNR Status on ixigo
- Go to the ixigo trains website or trains app.
- Select “PNR Status”.
- Enter your 10-digit PNR number here.
- Click the “SEARCH” button.
- You can now view the status of your PNR.
It will also include your train’s name, number, origin and destination, as well as your seat and coach number (if your seat is confirmed).
Alternatively, you can go to ixigo’s PNR status enquiry page. Just enter your unique PNR number and find out the status of your booked ticket.
A passenger usually gets a CNF in train ticket if they book while there are seats available on the train. For this, the reservation must be done well in advance. If not, you are most likely to get a waitlisted ticket that often gets confirmed closer to the travel date. In these cases, when a passenger initially books a ticket, the status of the ticket may be shown as “Waiting List” or “WL”. This indicates that the passenger has not yet been allocated a seat on the train, and their booking is in a queue, waiting for a seat. The status changes to CNF when a seat becomes available for the passenger.
After your ticket is confirmed and the chart preparation is complete, a message containing the updated status will be sent to your registered mobile number by IRCTC. It will also include your coach details and seat number.
We hope that now you are clear about what CNF means in Railways. Additionally, you can read about the different types of PNR status and their meanings on ixigo.
