The US Embassy in India has launched an initiative to reduce the visa processing time for first-time applicants. It has begun holding special Saturday appointments for those who require in-person interviews.

In order to accommodate the visa applicants, the US Embassy in New Delhi and Consulates in Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Hyderabad remained open on January 21st. Under this initiative, they will continue to offer additional slots of appointments on select Saturdays of the coming months.

This step is one part of a system that has been put in place to address the visa processing backlog caused by COVID-19. The Mumbai General Consulate has also extended its weekday hours to make space for additional appointments.

The US will deploy dozens of temporary consular officers from Washington and other embassies in India between January and March 2023 to increase the processing capacity. It will also assign more permanent staff to its offices.
