Much similar to Baisakhi and Vishu, Ugadi celebrates the onset of new year in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka. This year, it falls on the 6th of April 2019, the first day of the Hindi calendar month-Chitra.
The festival is celebrated with much grandeur and zeal. On this day, people adorn themselves in beautiful new clothes and decorate their houses with mango leaves and rangolis. The day is also considered particularly auspicious to start new businesses and ventures.
Book FlightsDishes, sweets and special delicacies are prepared for the festival, which is then shared with friends and neighbours.
Amidst the dishes prepared is a special dish called Ugadi Pachadi. Made of six very prime ingredients, each element in this dish highlights the ups and downs of life.
The ingredients include:
Neem flowers(Bitter): The difficulties in life
Tamarind(Sour): Challenges
Chilli(Spicy): Upsetting moments
Unripe mango(Tangy): Surprises
Salt(Salty): Interest in life
Jaggery(Sweet): Happiness
Ugadi is celebrated a day after the first new moon and after the sun passes the celestial equator on the spring equinox.
