Three Injured As Jhelum Express derailed

Tuesday morning brought us sad news!

Three people were injured after 10 coaches of the Jhelum Express derailed in the wee hours of Tuesday morning while the train was coming from Jammu and going towards Pune. Consequently, four trains were subsequently cancelled.

The train that left the Phillaur Station after a halt, derailed just 50 m short of the bridge over the river Sutlej.

Both, Relief and Medical Teams had reached the site and the rescue operation is already underway. Even the injured were taken to the hospital.

Anil Saxena, Additional Director General of Railways said, Senior officials, medical and relief team have reached the accident site. Rescue and restoration work underway”. He further added, “Accident resulted in blockage of traffic on both sides, information on trains to be cancelled and diverted is made available by Northern Railway”.

While the rear coaches of the train have already been moved to Phillaur, the front portion, which includes the engine as well as the eight coaches have been moved to the next station–Jalandhar Railway Station. Additionally, the railway authorities are engrossed in making arrangements for passengers to be able to continue their journey. Passengers who belonged to Jalandhar cancelled their journey and returned home, while some have been sent to Ludhiana by buses.

Subhash Chander, Sub Divisional Magistrate, said, “Coaches from S-1 to S-8, B-5 and the pantry car have been damaged. Several coaches from rail track length of around 20 m suffered damages”.

To identify the mishap, a high-level inquiry has been instructed.
