India will be celebrating its 68th Republic Day on 26th January 2017. Titled as a national holiday, Republic day is seen as an important day in Indian history, as many freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for the country’s independence are remembered and paid tribute for their contribution towards the nation. It is believed that on 24th January, 1950, the Constitution of India was signed after approximately 3 years of contemplation. It was finally implemented on 26th January, 1950 owing to the anniversary of Purna Swaraj Day on 26th January, 1930.

The celebration starts with a grand military parade; the parade starts from the Raisina Hill, adjacent to Rashtrapati Bhawan and crosses Rajpath, finally ending at India Gate. Post the parade, the Prime Minister unfolds the National flag followed by laying a wreath at Amar Jawan Jyoti.
Many medals and bravery awards are then given away to civilians and soldiers for their contribution to the society in their respective ways. It’s interesting to note that a foreign head of state is always invited at the ceremony as a special guest. Colorfully decorated elephants, military flypast and a 21-gun salute – all this and more add charm to the overall celebration. Also, several artists participate in moving parades and perform dances with respect to their native region.

Also, many cultural dances and joyous events are offered on display to further the enthusiasm of the event. You may even observe some of the rides, carrying children who have received the National Bravery Award. The grand celebration doesn’t end here; the food served includes Saffron Biryani, Boondi Laddu, Tricolour Pulao (Rice) and Kesaria-Hara Paneer Tikka.
The Republic Day celebration ends on 29th January, with the band of the three wings of the military (the Indian Air Force, Indian Navy and Indian Army) performing their best to close the event on a happy note.

Ticket Prices: Republic Day Parade Reserved Seats: INR 500 for reserved seats and INR 100, 50 and 10 for unreserved seats.
Important tips to be kept in mind:
- Government offices, post offices, schools and most businesses are closed on this day.
- Front row passes are usually for VIPs in Delhi, but you can avail the front row seats provided you know any.
- You must be seated for the event by 9:00 AM, as the main Republic Day parade will start sharp at 9:30 AM.
- All the entrances will be closed before the starting of the National Anthem.
- You’ll be required to spend extra for the already reserved seats.
- Do bring along a jacket, as the weather is going to be quite chilly.
- The parade can be best viewed from near the stage and car parking.
- One has to rely on the public toilets nearby for the washroom facility.
