The Indian Railways is always striving to improve the passenger experience. Recently, the Railway Board has decided to implement 20 innovations suggested by its employees to make train journeys safer and improve passenger comfort.
These innovations include a bell warning to alert travellers minutes before a train departs and real-time CCTV monitoring inside coaches among others.
An order has been issued to all zonal general managers and production units to gear up for the implementation of these ideas on a mass scale.
Book TrainsThe 20 innovations range from boosting technical safety to enhancing passenger comfort. Some of the major ones are:
Devices to detect flaws in rail tracks:
While the North Central Railway has developed a system for ultrasonic flaw detection of rails, the Malda division has implemented pyrometers to monitor speed and temperature of tracks. The Allahabad division has developed a detector for hot axle boxes in running trains that will help prevent possible derailments due to a seizure.
Natural water coolers:
The Western Railway has developed water coolers with zero electric consumption, each at a cost of Rs.1.25 lakh and with a lifespan of ten years. These coolers have already been installed at Borivali, Dahanu Road, Nandurbar, Udhana and Bandra railway stations.
Bell warning to alert train departure:
A bell system alerting passengers that the train will be departing in two minutes from the platform is proposed. It is already in use on platform number one of Allahabad junction railway station.
Real-time monitoring of CCTV footage:
Also on the list is a system to monitor CCTV footage in real-time on the trains. The North Central Railways has developed this system and has already installed it in all 18 coaches of Humsafar trains.
Air quality monitoring:
Another innovation the Railways is looking at is the monitoring of air quality. Equipment for this has been developed by the North Central Railways and installed at the Allahabad railway station.
Information about the implementation of these initiatives was also confirmed by the Western Railway on its official Twitter handle:
