All passengers will soon get speedy Wi-Fi on-board to surf the net, send/receive emails, access Facebook, use WhatsApp and much more throughout their travel on Indian Railway’s network. After successfully installing Wi-Fi systems at over 125 stations across the country, Indian Railways is planning to provide internet access to all the on-board passengers through Wi-Fi.
As a fact, the railways already provide internet access on trains like Tejas, Delhi-Howrah Rajdhani Express and other luxury trains. Although, this service is provided through satellite which is not a viable cost-effective method.
“We are planning to have high-speed Wi-Fi in trains. The internet provided on trains currently is through satellite, but is very expensive”, said a railway ministry official.
Under the new system, the Wi-Fi devices will be installed on track-side equipment at periodic intervals which will ensure an uninterrupted internet access throughout the journey. The research for this project is being executed by IIT Chennai and Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT).
