In a bid to increase the safety of passengers, Indian Railways is all set to launch fireproof coaches. The first train to get these coaches will be the Shatabdi Express (12046/12045) that runs on the Delhi-Chandigarh route.
Nine chair car coaches and one executive coach in these Shatabdi trains were revamped under the Swarna Scheme. Installing these fire safety measures in the coaches is also a part of this scheme. The estimated cost of the project is Rs. 2.5 crore for each coach of the new train.
To make the train compartments fireproof, railways is planning to use optimum quality fire retardant furnishing materials. In case a fire breaks out, these materials will minimise the damage. The specifications of these furnishing materials have been reviewed to incorporate fire retardant parameters in line with UIC (International Union of Railways) and other international norms.
These measures will ensure safer travel for all railway passengers.
