Starting this January, passengers on select trains can have a great shopping experience. They can buy beauty products, kitchen appliances, and home products while travelling.
Mumbai division of Western Railway, has given a 5-year contract to a private player who is licensed to sell household and beauty products. The contractor is not allowed to sell eatables, cigarettes, tobacco or alcohol in trains. The license is valid for 16 mail and express trains.
The contract has been given at the cost of INR 3.5 crores. Two uniformed staffers will be selling the goodies on carts between 8 am and 9 pm only. Other than cash, debit and credit cards will also be accepted as a mode of payment.
As per a railway official, “A catalogue will be circulated among passengers from which they can choose what they want to buy when the cart circulates. We have prohibited any heavy promotional activity for the sale of such goods.”
