Railways Announces 5 Projects to Enhance Rail Connectivity in Northeast India

Despite facing challenges and disruptions due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Indian Railways has been undertaking a host of developmental projects to provide better services to train passengers.

The latest of these projects are aimed at boosting rail connectivity in the North East. According to the details shared by the national transporter, the entire rail network in the Northeastern states of the country has been converted into a broad gauge network.

While the majority of the Northeastern state capitals are already connected to the rest of the country via rail network, in the coming years, these five major projects will aim to boost their connectivity even further:

1. Jiribam-Imphal railway project: Imphal, the capital of Manipur, is all set to get rail connectivity through the 111 km long Jiribam-Imphal project by the Indian Railways. This project is likely to be completed by March 2022.

2. Bhairabi Sairang railway project: Mizoram will finally be a part of the vast network of the Indian Railways with the Bhairabi Sairang railway project. The project, which is being undertaken in the state capital of Aizawl, will be a 51 km long railway line and is expected to be completed by March 2023.

3. Dimapur-Kohima railway project: Kohima will be easily accessible via rail network through the 82 km long Dimapur-Kohima project. The Rs.500 crore rail project is expected to be completed by March 2023.

 

4. Sivok-Rangpo railway project: Sikkim will finally get rail connectivity through the 44 km long Sivok-Rangpo railway project that is underway in the state capital of Gangtok. Once this project is complete, passengers will be able to travel from West Bengal to Sikkim in just two hours.

5. Tetelia-Byrnihat railway project: The highly-popular tourist destination of Shillong will be connected to the Indian Railways network through the 22 km long Tetelia-Byrnihat project. This railway project is likely to be completed by March 2022.

These projects will certainly help boost connectivity, tourism and local economic activity in the Northeastern states.
