Pushkar Fair 2016: A Vibrant Nomadic Affair In The Desert of Thar

The time of year has come when the desert of Thar mirrors the vibrancy for which the Pushkar City is famous. Pushkar Camel Fair is organised every year for five days in the month of Kartik when the moon is full and the charm of the desert is at its peak. More than just a cattle trade fair, Pushkar is where one experiences the marvellous cocktail of wonderful art and tradition bringing it alive with celebration and fanfare.

Mela Highlights

Pushkar Camel Fair is more than just a cattle fair. A motley of activities and experiences are organised at Pushkar during the carnival that attracts tourists and travellers from all over the world making it one of the world’s biggest congregations. Here is what Pushkar has to offer:

Camel Safari

Trapeze through the sandy deserts of Pushkar sitting on beautifully adorned camel carts amidst the festivity.

Hot Air Ballooning

Pushkar is an only destination of its kind to host Hot Air Balloon Festival. Observe the vibrant melee of colours, dust, music, floating in hot air balloon above the desert.

Handicraft Heaven

A haven for handicrafts lovers, there are makeshift stalls that offer a number of traditional treats to take back as souvenirs and cherish the wonderful experience.

Fusion Fiesta

The Thar Desert comes alive in the evening with an electric performance from the finest fusion artists from the world during the fest. Dance your night away immersed in some rustic fusion music.

Cultural Contests

If you think the fun is over, it has just begun. Many competitions like moustache competitions, singing and photography contests are also organised for you to take part in.

What all to see

Brahma Temple

The only temple in the world where Lord Brahma is worshipped is located in Pushkar. As the legend goes, Lord Brahma was passing through the desert when three lotus petals fell down on three parts of the land and the three beautiful lakes sprung up. It is one of the most revered places in India to see.

Pushkar Lake

The beautiful lake surrounded by 52 flights is sacred and has been visited by Gods as described in fables. Taking a dip in the lake on the full moon day of Kartik is considered to be a holy deed. In the evening, the sacred lake takes on a mystical tint when visitors float lamps on the water.

Vohra Temple

The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu which has an image of the god  incarnated in the form of a wild boar. Must attend the evening aarti at Vohra Ghat which is an enchanting experience. It is one of the most sacred places to visit in Pushkar.

Kalbelia Dance

End your day with a sensuous dance performance from the nomadic community Kalbelia that will sway you away with their unbelievably flexible serpentine shimmying and their lovely traditional black attire. It is organised every Saturday at Vohra Ghat Chowk.

How to reach

On a camel, if you dare!

Since that is not possible, you can reach Pushkar by rail, road, and air. Pushkar is 415 km from Delhi. There are direct overnight buses from Delhi to Pushkar. The nearest railway station from Pushkar is Ajmer which has well-connected trains from Delhi. If you are flying, the nearest airport to Pushkar is in Jaipur, 164 km from Pushkar.

Where to stay

Pitch a tent!

The best way to soak the nomadic spirit of the fair is by pitching a tent under the full moon. There are private companies that organise camps close to open grounds at Pushkar. The camps promise luxurious accommodation equipped with all the amenities to make your stay comfortable.

There are even 5-star luxury resorts and heritage forts that offer extravagant filled with splendour and royal charm amidst the desert. Jagat Palace and Pushkar Fort have magnificent suites and rooms where you can stay.
