Celebrated on the new moon day in the month of Magh, Maha Shivratri is one of the prominent Hindu festivals in India. This auspicious day marks the remembrance of overcoming darkness and ignorance in life. Legends say that Maha Shivaratri also marks the anniversary of the cosmic dance performed by Shiva.
Important Rituals:
1. On this auspicious day, devotees wake up early in the morning and take a ritual bath,
preferably in the holy waters of any nearby river. After that, devotees wear fresh clothes and pay a visit to the nearest Shiva temple and perform Jalabhishek on the Shivling with six different dravyas including milk, yogurt, honey, ghee, sugar and water.
2. Gulaal, lotus flowers, bilva leaves, etc. also keep great significance in the Maha Shivratri puja. Devotees offer as many as 108 or more leaves on the Shivling.

There are a number of beliefs and stories associated with Maha Shivratri. According to a popular belief, on this day, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati got married. Some believe that Lord Shiva performed the dance of creation, preservation and destruction on this night. Devotees also consider it as Thanksgiving Day to Lord Shiva.
Spiritual Significance:
The tradition of staying awake at night on Maha Shivratri signifies the power of Lord Shiva. He is considered as the destroyer of ignorance and therefore devotees meditate and contemplate to remove the darkness of ignorance from their minds.
This festival signifies the importance of virtues and purity in our lives so that we can achieve our true potential by imbibing them.
