To improve the efficiency of operations, Indian railways have introduced the tracking of trains via ISRO satellite.

Railways has installed a global positioning system (GPS) in 2,700 electric locomotives and in 3,800 diesel locomotives, and it plans to fit the GPS in 6,000 locomotives by December 2021.

The data recorded by the GPS is used for control office operation, National Train Enquiry System (maintains the train delay status), and also to analyze the safety purposes.
