Journeys on this British-era train line are an unmissable part of visits to Shimla. Lasting between 4 to 5 hours, the gentle pace of these trains allows travellers to slowly soak in the dramatic mountain views.

To further sweeten the pot, the Northern Railway has said that it will be restarting its hop-on hop-off service on the Kalka–Shimla section soon. This will allow passengers to “see all places of tourist interest on the purchase of a single ticket”.

Ticket holders will be able to board/de-board any coach of any train, at any station, if seats and a scheduled stoppage are available. You can see the fares and other rules for hop-on hop-off tickets here:

Right now, all tourists who wish to enter Himachal Pradesh need to apply for an e-pass on covid19epass.hp.gov.in. This will no longer be a requirement from July 1, as part of eased travel restrictions.
