Highlights of the new Pamban Bridge:

1. Upon completion, this bridge will replace the iconic Pamban Bridge, which opened in 1914 and is India’s first sea bridge.

2. The estimated cost of the project is ₹280 crore and the total length of the bridge is 2.078 kms.

3. The new bridge’s 72-meter-long vertical lift span is its distinctive feature. The span can be raised by 17 metres so as to let ships pass underneath it.

4. The structure will lift vertically upwards whilst staying parallel to the deck. Sensors will be used at each end to do this.

5. The new bridge will help trains to carry more weight, run at higher speeds and boost the volume of traffic towards Dhanushkodi and Rameswaram Temples.
