This first hydrogen train in India will use water as its main resource for generating power, setting it apart from conventional diesel or electric engines.
The hydrogen train’s trial run is set for the Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana, spanning 90 kilometers. Other potential routes include heritage mountain railways like the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, Nilgiri Mountain Railway, Kalka to Shimla trains, along with other picturesque and remote regions across India.
The hydrogen train speed is anticipated to reach a maximum speed of 140 km/h, delivering a fast, eco-friendly, and comfortable ride for passengers. Each hydrogen fuel tank will enable the train to travel up to 1,000 kilometers before needing to refuel, making it ideal for longer routes down the line.
Each hydrogen train is expected to cost approximately Rs 80 crore to develop. Significant infrastructure upgrades, including hydrogen storage facilities and dedicated refuelling stations, are being implemented to support its operation.
