Indian Railways along with the Ministry of Defense, is coming up with an all weather infrastructural project to connect Himachal Pradesh to Leh. This Bilaspur-Manali-Leh railway line will be reportedly the world’s highest railway line.

The Ladakh region usually remains cut-off from the rest of the country for nearly six months every winter due to the closure of the 434 km long Srinagar-Leh national highway.

Some of the features of this new line are:

1) The Bilaspur-Manali-Leh railway line project will be set at the highest point of 5,360 meters above the sea level, being comparable only to the Qinghai-Tibet rail line of China. This line will be connected to the 51 km long stretch from Upshi in Himachal Pradesh to Phe in Leh.

2) The project will help India strategically along the Indo-China border. Along with helping the armed forces of the country, the railway line will also help in boosting tourism and overall development of the region.

3) This railway line will provide seamless connectivity between areas in Bilaspur and Leh such as Manali, Upshi, Mandi, Sundernagar, Koksar, Keylong, Karu, Darcha as well some important towns of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.
