The trains will become operational only when the Indian Railways receives an official nod from the government.

Indian Railways is considering various proposals for the resumption of services.

Some of the critical steps include:

  • Thermal screening of passengers
  • Using the Aarogya Setu app to check the health status of the passengers.
  • All passengers would be encouraged to wear face masks when boarding a train.
  • A specific approval will be granted by the Railway Board for each train.
  • The focus will be on routes catering to migrant workers and avoiding the ones that are travelling to or halting at COVID-19 hotspots.
  • Indian Railways is also preparing the unused rakes of all passenger trains that were suspended due to lockdown. The rakes will undergo proper maintenance to return on the tracks once the lockdown ends.

A decision on the date of resumption of Indian Railways services is likely to be made this week.

Since the lockdown, Indian Railways has only been running freight and special parcel trains to ensure the supply of essential commodities.
