Heavy floods claim lives in Assam and Bihar; the situation remains critical

Heavy rains have displaced and affected millions in Bihar, Assam and several other north-eastern states.

HIGHLIGHTS:

Assam:

> Close to 90,000 hectares of farmland have been affected
> Almost 90% of the Kaziranga National Park has been submerged
> Over 4.6 million have been affected in Assam
>  The death toll rose to 14


Bihar:

> 25 people have been killed in Bihar
> 16 districts already affected
> 25.71 lakh people are affected


Assam:
Floodwaters have submerged 30 of the 33 districts in Assam, including 4,157 villages. The road connectivity across several districts has been disrupted. 199 relief camps have been put up so far which are providing shelter to 116,000 people. The government has released Rs.251.55 crore as assistance from the central share of SDRF for 2019-20.


Bihar: Large scale damage has been reported from Sheohar, East Champaran, Purnea, Darbhanga and Kishanganj.


Also, the state of Kerala is under red alert for extremely heavy rains after India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated that over 204 mm of rain is likely to hit six districts of the southern state in the next 24 hours.
