As per the new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), Railways will now directly run Shramik special trains in consultation with the MHA. The earlier guidelines had mentioned that the trains were being run on a request basis between individual states.

Here are the other important developments in the new SOP:

  • The train schedule, including stoppages and destination, shall be finalised and communicated to the states and UTs by the Ministry of Railways.
  • The Ministry of Railways will ensure more stoppages of the special trains for the convenience of migrant workers.
  • The Ministry of Railways will publicise the train schedule, protocols for entry and movement of passengers, services to be provided in coaches and arrangements with states and UTs for booking of tickets.

The Railways has run 1565 migrant trains and ferried over 20 lakh migrants since May 1.
