Government Shares New Guidelines For Air Travel; Meals To Be Allowed In Flights

The centre has issued a revised Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for domestic and international air travel. 

The new guidelines allow airlines to serve pre-packed meals, beverages onboard domestic flights. In fact, international carriers can now also serve hot meals and alcohol.

The official order was shared on the Ministry of Civil Aviation’s website.

Previously, due to the COVID-19 outbreak, domestic airlines were not allowed to provide any refreshments. International flight carriers were only permitted minimum catering, i.e., pre-packaged food placed on passenger seats before boarding.

Below are the details from the new SOP for airlines: 

Domestic flights

• Airlines are allowed to serve pre-packed snacks/meals/beverages as per their policy and according to flight duration.
• Tray set-up, plates and cutlery will be disposable in all classes. 
• Beverages will also be served in disposable containers. Pouring service will remain suspended. 
• The crew will wear a new set of gloves for every meal/beverage service.
• Airlines can allow in-flight entertainment for passengers. 
• The entertainment systems need to be cleaned and disinfected prior to boarding.
• All passengers should be provided with disposable earphones or cleaned and disinfected headphones. 

International Flights

• All airlines, private aircraft and charter flights can now serve hot meals and limited beverages.
• Tray set-up, plates and cutlery will be disposable in all classes.  
• Beverages, including alcohol, will be served in disposable glasses, and no pouring service will be available. 
• The crew is instructed to wear a fresh set of gloves for every meal or beverage service.
• Airlines can now allow passengers to use the in-flight entertainment. 
• All the screens and systems will have to be cleaned and disinfected prior to boarding.
• Passengers will be given disposable earphones or cleaned and disinfected headphones.
