Ladies first! In a move that is sure to bring relief, Railways has permitted all women commuters to travel in the Mumbai local trains, essentially the lifeline of the city.
Previously, only those engaged in frontline duties and essential staff as notified by the government of Maharashtra were allowed to travel in the local trains that are operated by the Central Railways and the Western Railways.

Book Train TicketsAll women travellers can travel in the local trains from today, October 21, between the non-peak timings of 11 am to 3 pm and after 7 pm.
Railways Minister Piyush Goyal announced the same on his official Twitter handle yesterday:
I am happy to announce that Railways will allow women to travel on suburban trains from 21 Oct between 11 am to 3 pm & after 7 pm. We were always ready and with the receipt of letter from Maharashtra Govt today, we have allowed this travel.

This move will bring huge relief to women travellers who do not fall in the category of essential workers and have been facing trouble in commuting.
To facilitate women travellers and ensure that all COVID-19 health protocols are followed, the Western Railways has announced that it will also operate 4 new ‘Ladies Special’ trains. This will also ensure that social distancing is followed properly and there is no overcrowding in the trains.

On October 16, the state government had requested the Railways to permit all women to travel in the local trains.
