Akasa Air, India’s newest airline, has started allowing domesticated cats and dogs to fly along with passengers in the cabin and the cargo compartments from 1st November 2022.

Here are the details:
- If your pet weighs less than 7 kgs, it can travel in the aircraft cabin. Those between 7 and 32 kgs must be checked in at the counter after passing through security.
- A pet heavier than 32 kgs needs to be sent via the cargo terminal.
- These weight criteria also include the weight of the container in which the animal is kept for the length of the flight.
- The pet must be carried properly in an IDA-approved container with a moisture-absorbent mat placed under them.
- There are distinct requirements for pet travel in the cabin and the cargo compartment. Tap here for the details.
- You must carry valid health, rabies vaccination, licence and other certificates as stipulated by the regulations.
- As of now, only two pets are allowed per flight: one each in the cabin and the cargo hold.
- Passengers with reduced mobility can be accompanied by a guide dog.
- In case of a last-minute booking for travelling with pets, passengers must provide a minimum of 48-hour advance notice to Akasa Air.
- Owing to safety concerns, if you are travelling with an infant, you will not be allowed to travel with a pet in the cabin. The pet may, however, be carried in the cargo compartment.
- Passengers travelling with pets will be allowed to check-in and board the plane on priority.
- Pet-owning passengers will be given a seat on one of the last five rows of the aircraft. However, Akasa Air will have the right to decide whether to assign a row or seat at any moment. The pet will not be given a special seat. It must be positioned in front of the passenger’s seat, or more specifically, close to the passenger’s feet.
If you are travelling on the same flight as your furry friend, the pet being carried in the cargo compartment will be handed over to you at the passenger terminal on arrival.
