Large industries dumping their waste and large gatherings of people performing rituals on the ghats made the water of the River Ganga unfit for drinking, even bathing.
But now, due to the Coronavirus pandemic, as humans are staying away from the river, the water quality has drastically improved.
Water from Har-ki-Pauri in Haridwar after being tested by the Uttarakhand Pollution Control Board has been classified as ‘fit for drinking after chlorination’, for the first time in decades.
According to a report by TOI, a reduction of 34% in faecal coliform and that of 20% in biological oxygen demand has been observed in the water samples in April.
Other than this, Gangetic dolphins have also been spotted at the Kolkata ghats after 30 years!
It is important that we take this as a lesson and not pollute our environment again.
