The Maharashtra government has approved the running of special trains to help passengers travel from Mumbai to Konkan for Ganesh Chaturthi, the ten-day mega-festival beginning on August 22.
The government approval comes as an exception to the existing guidelines of the state that otherwise do not permit inter-district train travel.
Lakhs of people from Mumbai and its adjoining suburbs head to the Konkan districts of Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg for the ten-day Ganesh Utsav. With stringent restrictions imposed on travel amid the COVID-19 pandemic, railway officials were receiving several appeals for such trains from public representatives.

Following the government nod, the Central and Western Railway, along with the Konkan Railway, is set to issue a detailed timetable and a standard operating procedure for these special trains.
These trains will take passengers to the Konkan districts and ferry them back to Mumbai. Furthermore, no inter-district travel will be allowed in other trains except in these Ganesh Chaturthi special trains.
Railways will ensure that all norms of the state and central government regarding the coronavirus pandemic, including physical distancing and sanitisation, are followed in the trains and at the railway stations.
