The Indian Railways is planning to make food ordering facility optional on trains like Rajdhani and Shatabdi. Meals like breakfast, lunch, snacks and dinner are served on these trains, charges of which are included in the total fare. On implementation of optional food ordering plan, fares of these trains are likely to reduce. For example, the fare of Delhi-Mumbai Rajdhani Express will come down by at least INR 300 per ticket.
The facility will start on an experimental basis in 10 trains for 45 days. It will help passengers order food of their choice, rather than eating the regular railway food. This initiative is a part of overall strategy to boost e-catering. Till date, the catering service is provided on 103 trains.
Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) is also planning to include food-delivery companies like Zomato, Foodpanda, and Swiggy to cater all type of food orders. The aim is to serve 100,000 meals a day, which is 5,000 as per now. If IRCTC achieves this number, it will leave Zomato with 67,000 orders and Swiggy with 34,000 orders behind. For its online catering service, IRCTC has collaborated with players like Sagar Ratna, Saravana Bhavan, Bikanervala, KFC, McDonald’s, Haldirams, Dominos and Pizza Hut.
