Once the recommendations of a fare review committee gets approved by the Railway Board, passengers might be asked to pay more for choosing lower berths. Also, instead of keeping flat fares, railways is planning to increase fares during festive seasons, and reduce them during lean months.
The panel chosen to review the flexi-fare system in premium trains has suggested that the transporter should adopt a dynamic pricing model, similar to that of airlines and hotels. Just like flyers pay more for front-row seats, train travellers will be asked to pay more for seats of their choice.
Also, fare increase may depend on some other factors such as convenient timings and availability of trains on a particular route. Passengers will also be offered discounts on trains reaching destinations at inconvenient timings, for example between 12:00 am and 04:00 am.
