Railway Board chairperson VK Yadav said, “Railways will monitor all the trains that are currently in operation to determine which trains have a long waiting list. Wherever there is a demand for a particular train, wherever the waiting list is long, we will run a clone train ahead of the actual train, so that passengers can travel.”

Here is everything you need to know about the Clone Train Scheme:

1) The special clone train will run as an alternative to the actual one. It will also have the same number as the original train. It will operate only when a train gets fully booked and the numbers of waitlisted passengers are on the higher side.

For example: If train number 02156 Bhopal Express, which runs between Hazrat Nizamuddin and Habibganj gets fully booked and there is still a heavy demand of waitlisted passengers, Indian Railways will then add another rake of the Bhopal Express with the same number to carry the waitlisted ticket-holders.

2) The stoppages of the clone trains will be less than the special trains.

3) The waitlisted passengers shall be informed about their berths or seats in the clone train soon after the reservation charts of the actual scheduled trains are released or 4 hours before the departure.

4) Only waitlisted passengers will be accommodated on a ‘clone’ train.

5) The clone trains will mainly consist of 3-tier AC coaches.
