The idea is to encourage cashless transactions so that people feel at ease after the demonetisation that happened last year in november. There is no doubt that the service charge contributes to the IRCTC’s overall revenue.
The Railways had earlier waived off the service charges on tickets till 30th June, 2017 and then extended it to 30th September. However, as per the latest reports, the Railways Board has directed that the benefits should be extended till March 2018.
The service charges on online booking of train tickets range from INR 20 to INR 40 across different categories. Approximately 33 percent of the total IRCTC revenue comes from the service charges collected from online bookings.
As per the report of revenue collection of the last financial year, about INR 540 crore of IRCTC’s total revenue of over INR 1,500 crore came from ticket bookings.
