Indian Railways offers ticket concessions to passengers falling under a number of categories. The element of concession might range between 10% and 100%.
The passengers, who are eligible to avail these concessions, should be from any of these categories – physically challenged, patients, senior citizens, award recipients, war widows, students, youths, kisans, artists and sportspersons, medical professionals, delegates attending conferences and persons with low income.

Search trains
Some of the travel concessions are as under:
1. Orthopaedically handicapped/paraplegic people, visually impaired, mentally challenged people travelling alone or with an escort for any purpose.
— 75% in 2nd class, SL, 1st class, 3AC, AC Chair Car
— 50% in 1AC and 2AC
— 25% in 3AC and AC Chair Car of Rajdhani/Shatabdi trains
— 50% in MST (Monthly Season Ticket) and QST (Quarterly Season Ticket)
— One escort is also eligible for the same element of concession
Hearing and speech impaired people (both afflictions together in the same person) travelling alone or with an escort for any purpose.
— 50% in 2nd class, SL, 1st class
— 50% in MST and QST
— One escort is also eligible for same element of concession
2. Cancer patients travelling alone or with an escort for treatment/periodic check-up.
— 75% in 2nd class, 1st class, AC Chair Car
— 100% in SL and 3AC
— 50% in 1AC and 2AC
— One escort eligible for the same element of concession (except in SL and 3AC where escort gets 75%)
3. Senior citizens
Men aged 60 years and above
— 40% in all classes
Women aged 58 years and above
— 50% in all classes
Travelling for any purpose in Rajdhani/Shatabdi/Duronto trains
Note: The senior citizen quota was suspended in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 situation. Railways is yet to resume it.
4. Awardees
Recipients of the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service and Indian Police Award for meritorious services, after the age of 60 – travelling for any purpose.
— 50% for men
— 60% for women
— In all classes and in Rajdhani/Shatabdi/Jan Shatabdi trains also
5. War widows – travelling for any purpose.
— 75% in 2nd and SL class
6. Students
Students going to hometown and educational tours:
General Category
— 50% in 2nd and SL class
— 50% in MST and QST
SC/ST Category
— 75% in 2nd and SL class
— 75% in MST and QST
Students of government schools in rural areas – for study tours – once a year.
— 75% in 2nd class
7. Youths
Youths travelling to attend National Integration Camps:
— 50% in 2nd and SL class for attending National Youth Project
— 40% in 2nd and SL class for attending Manav Uththan Sewa Samiti
Unemployed youths travelling to attend interviews in Public Sector Organisations/Central and State government:
— 50% in 2nd and SL class
— 100% in 2nd class
— 50% in SL class
8. Kisans
Kisans and Industrial Labourers
— 25% in 2nd and SL class
Kisans travelling by government-sponsored special trains
— 33% in 2nd and SL class
Kisans, Milk Producers and Delegates for attending Annual Conferences
— 50% in 2nd and SL class
9. Artists and Sportspersons
— 75% in 2nd and SL class
— 50% in 1st and AC Chair Car, 3AC, 2AC
— 50% in AC Chair Car, 3AC and 2AC of Rajdhani/Shatabdi/Jan Shatabdi trains
10. Medical Professionals
Allopathic doctors – travelling for any purpose:
— 10% in all classes of Rajdhani/Shatabdi/Jan Shatabdi trains
Nurses and Midwives – for leave and duty:
— 25% in 2nd and SL class
11. Delegates for attending Annual Conferences of certain All India bodies of social/cultural/educational importance.
— 25% in 2nd and SL class
12. Izzat MST to persons with monthly income not exceeding Rs.1500, working in unorganised sectors – for journeys upto maximum 100 kilometres — Rs.25.
